Luxury Lid

This cutie came to me after I impulse-purchased some wool/alpaca/silk blend yarn and unpacked it onto my scarf. It's warm and soft, and its not having a lot of elasticity (and therefore needing occasional adjustment) is made up for by its not having a lot of elasticity (and therefore not leaving a dent in your hair.)

um.... are you sure about 63 stitches? cause that's what I used and it is WAY too small. I'll finish it for some kid, but I should have checked your math before starting the project. 63 stitches / 18.5 for your guage X 4 inches = 13.6 inches in circumfrance.

Yep, 63 stitches! Resting, my hat measures about 19" now after I've worn it a few weeks, but it stretches out for my 22" head with room to spare. I wonder whether you used yarn with a very different fiber composition? Sulka is very, very relaxed, probably because of the high silk content. I'm sorry it didn't work for you in any case :^(

Could this be done using a circular needle? I haven't mastered using double pointed needles yet. Could I use straight needles and sew a seam?

You can definitely use a circular needle to start, but when you get to the crown there will be so few stitches you will have to add in more needles. Straight needles is another option - add in two more stitches (one for each end) and maybe knit each one even on the purl sides so that you have a selvedge for sewing up the seam later. Just make sure you remember about the extra stitch at the start and finish when you are counting out for the crown!

It is possible to use a circular needle all the way through the pattern. The technique is called "magic loop"; as you decrease you divide your fabric so that a part of the cord connecting your needles can stick out beyond the size of your project.Think of an enfinity symbol with your work at the center. http://youtube/idSpcOEZpnk
